Taking the right approach?

If you are a network manager, even if your own staff handle IT support 99 percent of the time, the chances are you have a maintenance contract with another company to cover all your network's hardware and software. There is something very reassuring in having someone else involved when there are problems. Network managers and staff know that it is just not possible to have access to every spare part they might need, and that there could be times when their own knowledge and experience will not be sufficient.

When you buy any sort of network or PC equipment, you are likely to get some form of warranty support. Do not be misled into believing
this will meet all your needs. At best, it probably provides a return and replace service. You send back the faulty part, and the vendor will send a replacement. If it was an important piece of kit, your whole network could be out of action for a day at least. And that’s just the hardware side. You still have to think of the software to!
